Our Story

Backyard Bistro is the creation of Jill and Adam Spell, built from a shared passion for seasonal Vermont dining, local ingredients, and genuine hospitality. Charlotte, Vermont locals, the Spells spent 26 years owning and operating La Villa in Shelburne before bringing their experience, community roots, and love of food home to create Backyard Bistro.

Inspired by Vermont’s changing seasons, Backyard Bistro focuses on fresh locally sourced ingredients, thoughtful cooking, craft cocktails, pizza, and warm, welcoming service. Over the years, the restaurant has become a favorite gathering place in Charlotte for relaxed dinners, date nights, celebrations, private events, and special occasions near Burlington and throughout Chittenden County.

Whether guests join us for a casual night out, seasonal chef specials, or Vermont catering and private dining, our goal remains the same: creating meaningful experiences centered around great food, connection, and hospitality.
